HUMN 303 Week 5 Discussion: Music and Dance

Professor and class,

Music nowadays is part of our lives. We listen to music while driving and going on for a long trip, we go
to concerts to listen to our favorite artists and sing their songs. We also listen to music to relax, to
express our feelings such as being in love, being heartbroken and even to study. I can say that music is
important in everything that we do and as our book states music can be experienced in two basic ways:
“hearing” or “listening” (Martin & Jacobus, 2018). We listen to music sometimes and not pay attention
to the lyrics; other times we listen carefully to every lyric and we can even cry when we listen and sing.
One type of music that I did not like before and that I like nowadays is Rock, I could say that one of the
modifications of rock that I like now is the pop version of it.

The term pop has been used since the early 20th century to refer to popular music in general, but from
the mid-1950s it began to be used for a distinct genre, aimed at a youth market, often characterized as a
softer alternative to rock and roll. From about 1967, it was increasingly used in opposition to the term
rock music, to describe a form that was more commercial, ephemeral and accessible (Wikipedia, 2020).
A song that represents the version of rock mentioned above is a song named “ move it”, written by Ian
Samwell, and recorded by Cliff Richard. It is a very nice song, the first time I listened to it, I did not even
speak or understand English, but I liked the beat and I just started moving with it; it basically made me
dance. Here is the link for the song.
