Professor and Class,
An example of a Greek or Roman advancement that that improved the quality of their life, or made
their society more efficient, I would have to say would be the Roman Census, not only did it
improve their quality of life, it inspired the US to do the same. Every five years, each male citizen in
Rome had to register for the census, and declare his wife, family, children, and slaves as riches, and
if he failed to do so, he would loose his riches and be sold into slavery, interesting concept, but,
moving forward. The more interesting factuality here is that the census, for the slave, meant
freedom, if the master wished to free him, he simply registered the slave as a citizen, and the
slave was then free. This is profoundly interesting not only that they had a census but, the fact that
the census was their way of keeping order and tally on the citizens, and, is still used today. You all

I was reading on it. I never knew that they could declare the slave as a citizen to free them. Very
,interesting. I do agree that the census is a great advancement. It keeps good track of the
population. I think if the rule now was you would lose your riches if you didn't register than we may
actually have more people do it. While reading the site you gave it also says that there were two
censors that were the over seers of the census. That must have been extremely hard on them to do
this. Its interesting to find how many things we have nowadays came from the ancient world.

Exactly my point, fascinating isn't it? When I read that, I thought of the IRS , and how they have lost
so many employees and handling all of the tax returns, must of been something that stressful, or
possibly even worse, however, they still accomplished it, and now, we use it today, it is a great
thing, at least I think so.

This all is so interesting you all bring up a good point. Jennifer i think that is the reason why we all
report all of our assets i mean who would want to lose any of there contribution right no wonder the
IRS is always sending people reminders of what they own and what taxes must be paid. This
reminds us how the system really is and how it developed.

The Roman Aqueducts were a huge advancement to supply the city with water from miles away.
This helped with household water, as well as the many fountains and bath houses their culture
enjoyed.

The Roman Aqueducts were a wonderful advancement in the ancient world. They were so well built
that some of the structures that carried life giving water to the population of the city state are still
standing. It's an advancement that was used in farming here in America. They even provided
inspiration for modern plumbing.

The roman aqueducts were a huge advancement, however, I believe that it was the advancements
in engineering that made these possible and improved the quality of life. Without the
advancements in engineering the Roman Aqueduct would not have been possible. Another example
of the advancements in engineering that have improved the quality of life for their society is the
Hierapolis sawmill which was the earliest machine to use a crank and rod mechanism in its
construction.

The aqueducts helped to improve the lifestyle of the roman civilization. They allowed farmers easy
access to water for their crops and cattle. The aqueducts also provided water to the cities for public
use.

As I have done my research on this topic of how the quality of life has improved as a result of the
Greeks and Romans, I see that the Greeks helped create Doctors and early forms of medicine.
Some of the beliefs are that the diseases that had been going around where a part of poor water
and sewage. Through the advancement of the aqueducts it also lead to cures for diseases and help
create the medical profession.

The idea of living of cities, like with the Greeks, was a cultural statement in itself. To them it
represented an advancement from the mere existence as a peasant living off the land. One might
say they saw themselves as a further step in the evolution of man.
For it was the barbarian tribes who still lived dispersed all over the countryside. In the Roman mind,
cities formed its inhabitants into greater, abler, nobler beings.
