Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution (graded)
Given the information from this week's reading on the Enlightenment, the New Rationalism, and
the Scientific Revolution, how did advancements in science and reasoning change the lives of
people at this time? In addition, what effects did the Industrial Revolution have on the world?
The English Enlightenment, the New Rationalism, and the Scientific Revolutions were
very important events that occured in London after the Great Fire. Due to the Great Fire that
occured on September 2, 1666 many propositions came to play, such as the constructions of
buildings and roads in order to make the lives of people safer since majority of the buildings and
homes were destroyed. This was due to the constructions that were made out of wood. After the
devastation, “wood construction was largely banned; brick and stone were require” (346), by
switching the constructions from wood to bricks and stone, it made it safer for people to live in
and would not burn down as quickly as homes that were made from wood construction.
Simultaneously, the inventions of new science technology and instruments helped aid scientists
to “observed and measure natural phenomena with increasing accuracy” (347). Another great
discovery in science was the compound microscope. To this day, this equipment has been
modified to keep assisting scientists to be more precise.
The Industrial Revolution had a great impact on the world because the Lunar Society
members discussed many topics that would benefit the industry such as chemistry, medicine, and
electric gases (351). Due to this meeting, many things were introduce to improve the industry
such as, the techniques for producing iron and what they could use it for. Due to the strength of
cast iron, Abraham Darby, “proposed to build a single-arch cast-iron bridge across the River
Severn” (352).
