Week 1: The Value of a Master's-Prepared
Nurse
Consider the current healthcare delivery models and practice settings. Reflect on how
nursing practice is transforming in response to the current demands of the healthcare
system and answer one of the following questions:

1. What differentiates the practice of a master's-prepared nurse compared to that of
a baccalaureate-prepared nurse?
2. What is the value of a master's degree in nursing?
3. What do you consider to be the most essential professional competency for a
master's-prepared nurse practicing in the 21st century?
Refer to AACN Essentials, NLN competencies, and CCN Nursing Conceptual
Framework. Use at least one outside scholarly article to support your position. Provide
an example to illustrate an application to professional practice.

What do you consider to be the most essential professional competency for a master's-
prepared nurse practicing in the 21st century?

One of the essential professional competencies for a master’s-prepared nurse is cultural competency. It
doesn't matter in which part of the US you are living; it is very common to spot people with different
ethnic background and sociocultural diversity. Thus, a healthcare professional must be sensitive to
cultural competency as a part of holistic care. In order to strengthen cultural competencies, a healthcare
professional should look into AACN’s initiatives to meet the standards in a graduate nursing program.
AACN presents with six core cultural competencies for graduate nursing. According to Clark et al. (2011),
those six core cultural competencies serve as the foundations for development and application of
cultural competency concepts.

AACN’s six core competencies focus on the incorporation of social and cultural factors when delivering
patient-centered care. A healthcare professional may not be familiar with a patient’s ethnic and
socioeconomic background; however, one has to be sensitive to notice the difference and behave with
acceptance and consideration. As an example, some cultures, such as the Thai, consider that touching
the head is regarded as disrespectful. Therefore, even if a patient suffered a head injury, a healthcare
professional should consider the patient’s cultural values and ask for a permission to touch the head.

Moreover, due to the socioeconomic and cultural background, many Asian patients have a tendency to
use “home remedies.” Before a healthcare professional starts to educate what medications those
patients should take, one has to consider with local socioeconomic and cultural practices. A healthcare
professional should take those “home remedies” as a part of the consideration of treatment. By
following up with evidence-based practice and peer-reviewed journals, a healthcare professional would
be able to incorporate the “home remedies” for the purpose of honoring the patients’ cultural practices
