B General information about the book and the writer

1
The title of the book is Animal Farm. The relation of the title to the story is that a farm is
runned by animals. First it was called Manor Farm but when the Animals take over the farm
they call it, Animal Farm. The title completely fits the book.

2
The writer of the book is George Orwell. He was born in Motihari in India on June 25, 1903.
He and his mom moved to England when he was one year old. He was a journalist and an
author. He had an older sister, Majorie and a younger sister, Avril. He went to school and
because his family didn’t had enough money he joined the Indian Imperial Service in Birma
in 1922. He quit after five years. This period inspired him to write the novel Burmese Days.
He started to be a journalist. He moved to Paris. This didn’t go well. He lived in poverty. This
also inspired him to write a book. Down and Out in Paris and London. He spent six months in
Morocco where he wrote Coming Up for Air. He worked for the BBC. Orwell is best known
for his two novels: Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. Both books were published at the
end of Orwell’s life. They both turned into films and are still very popular.

3
Animal Farm was published in 1945. After the Second World War. He shows in this book his
aversion for every dictatorship, especially Hitler in Germany and Franco in Spain. He also
warns for communism in Russia. Because Russia was an ally of England, he couldn’t directly
offend them, so he wrote it in an animal story.

4
It is a fable because the animals can speak and they can do lots of other things that aren’t
possible in real life. Like discussing, singing, building and walking on two legs.
Page 96: ‘It was a pig walking on his hind legs.’
Page 24: ‘When they had once got it by heart the sheep developed a great liking for this
maxim, and often as they lay in the field, they would all start bleating ‘Four legs good, two
legs bad!”

5
The main theme of the book is dominance and equality.
Other themes of the book are friendship, loyalty, power and cleverness.
In the beginning every animal talks about equality. At some point the pigs think they are
better than the other animals. So, they dominate the other ones. But the other animals don’t
even notice that. They are super loyal and not as clever as the pigs.

, For example: In the beginning friendship and equality are very important. But very soon the
pigs take advantage by letting the other animals do all the hard work. They also take the best
food and at some point they start sleeping in the house instead of laying in the barn with the
other animals. They are a lot cleverer than the other animals so they get away with
everything and the animals keep loyal to the pigs.
Page 49: ‘it was about this time that the pigs suddenly moved into the farmhouse and took
up their residence there.’

6
The story takes place on a farm in England. There is no specified time period. We can assume
that Orwell refers to the Russian revolution which is in 1917-1945. The story has some
similarity with the Russian revolution.

For example, they start a rebellion by attacking Mr. jones and his men. They take over the
farm. That’s some sort of revolution.

7
Animal farm is written in the third person. Someone from the outside tells the story.
Page 42: ‘on the third Sunday after Snowball’s expulsion, the animals were somewhat
surprised to hear Napoleon announce that the windmill was to be built after all.’

8
There is a farm called Manor Farm, ruled by Mr. Jones. The dying pig Old major gives all the
animals a message. They should stop accept that humans are the boss. He teaches them the
song “Beasts of England”. Their rebellion song. The animals are being underfed. Now the
animals on this farm do not agree with how things go. They don’t want to work for human
anymore. So they start the rebellion and they take over the farm. The pigs write ‘the seven
commandments’. That are the main rules of the farm. For some it’s too hard to read it, so
they have to remind one thing: ‘four legs good, two legs bad’. In the beginning it all goes
very well. They run the farm and they have enough food for everyone. Mr. jones attacks the
farm to get it back but he fails. The animals are stronger. They win the ‘battle of the
cowshed.’ There are differences between the animals. The pigs are a lot smarter than the
rest of the animals. They are acting as if they are the leaders. The animals don’t mind that
and they work really hard. Especially Boxer, a horse. Snowball and Napoleon are two pigs
who both want to be the leader. They never agree and have discussions all the time. Mollie,
a horse, goes to another farm. She does like humans and likes to be spoiled. Napoleon has
raised nine dogs and they chase away Snowball. Snowball wanted to build a windmill but
Napoleon didn’t want that. After Snowballs expulsion, Napoleon is the leader and he wants
to build a windmill anyway. So they start building a windmill. This takes a lot of work and all
the animals work really hard. Except for the pigs. He and squealer (another pig) say they
want everyone to be equal but in fact that’s not true. “All animals are equal but some
animals are more equal than others”. The pigs get a lot of privileges. The other animals are
hungry. The windmill is destroyed right after it was finished. Napoleon blames Snowball.
They build it up again.
