Abstract
In society, we have established many social norms that are customary to our group, culture, and
existence. These social norms help us feel normal and accepted. Our text states that social
norms are the “implicit or explicit rules a group has for the acceptable behaviors, values, and
beliefs of its members” (Aronson, Wilson, & Akert, 2013, p. 205) This essay will go over an
experiment executed to see how people respond to someone acting outside of the realms of what
is socially acceptable and violating the social norms. The social norm that will be violated is
individual’s personal space. It has become socially acceptable to allow individuals in the United
States to have a certain amount of space/distance: this is often referred to as their bubble space.
When this space is invaded, it causes people to become very upset. This essay will describe the
experiment and its results. It will explain the reactions I observed of other people as their social
norm was being violated, along with how I felt being the perpetrator of this violation. These
reactions will then be tied back to social psychology to better explain why the reactions I both
felt and perceived manifested in the manner they did.
