Explain how any two agents of socialisation influence gender
identity

One agent of socialisation which influences gender identity is the family.
The family is an agent of primary socialisation and arguably the most
important agent of socialisation. The child can learn gender through
canalisation, this is a process of socialisation mentioned by Oakley.
Canalisation is when parents manipulate a child's behaviour and identity
by giving specific gendered toys for them to play with, for example a boy
will be given dolls which will socialise them to be caring, while boys may
be given toys and construction sets, which will teach them practical
skills. This process influences and teaches traditional gender roles.
Another way which the family influences gender identity is though
imitation, children will imiate the behaviour of same sex parents, this will
make them role models. Boys may be influenced by their father
completing physical housework such as putting up shelves while girls
may be encouraged to cook after seeing their mother cooking often.

Another agent of socialisation which influences gender identity is the
media. The media can show a child what it is and isn’t to be male or
female. It can pass on gendered stereotypes and roles such as in filmes
and series where women can be presented as passive, conformist and
nurturing and males shown as more intelligent, hands on and violent. An
example where this can be seen is in children's television shows such as
fireman sam where the man is the main character, doing a traditionally
manly job and in Fifi and the Flower Tops which is based on female
characters and promotes flowery, feminine identity. Characters and
people which children see in the media become role models, this will
eman they will look at them to imitate their behaviour according to
gender as well as learning what gender means from the media. The
media shows children what is expected of their gender and the norms
and values associated.
