What is digestive system?
Phases of digestive system?
Diagram of digestive system?
Digestive system consists of a group of organs that
breakdown food eaten into smaller molecules that can be
used by body cells.
Digestive System
GIT Accessory organs
AKA the alimentary canal. Teeth, tongue,
salivary glands, lever, gall
bladder and pancreas.
Continuous tube extending from
mouth to anus through thoracic
and abdominal cavities.
Length is 5-7m.
Muscles are in a tonus state.
Phases of Digestion
Ingestion Process involving taking food
and liquids inside the mouth.
Secretion Calls within the GIT and
accessory organs secrete 7L
of water, acid, buffers and
enzymes into lumen of tract.
Motility Alternating coordinated
contractions and relaxations
, of longitudinal and circular
muscles to move bolus down
the canal.
Digestion Process of breaking down
food into smaller molecules
to be used by body cells.
Process is done by
mechanical and chemical
digestion.
Absorption Products move from lumen
into bloodstream or lymph.
Defecation Unabsorbed materials leave
the body through anus in
the form of feces.
Mechanical digestion
Results from mastication in which food is manipulated by
tongue, ground by teeth and mixed with saliva to form bolus.
Chemical digestion
Salivary amylase- secreted by salivary glands- initiates
breakdown of carbohydrates into monosaccharides which
are absorbable in the bloodstream. Process takes place in
mouth.
Lingual lipase-secreted by lingual glands-initiates breakdown
of fats/lipids/dietary triglycerides into fatty acids and
diglycerides in the stomach.
