Critically discuss the process and designs used in the adaptation and/or translation of
psychological tests for use in multicultural contexts. (10)
Language of testing is a challenge in a country that has 11 official languages, thus the
considerations of test adaptations and translations. See pages 77 to 80 of Foxcroft and Roodt
(2009), pages 83 to 87 of Foxcroft and Roodt (2013) and pages 104 to 107 of Foxcroft and
Roodt (2018).

As an introduction, some reasons for the translation or adaptation in the South African context
can be given.
Process of adaptation of measures should be looked at within an overall context which would
include the following considerations:
Administration
• validity of a measure can be impacted on by not having clear understanding of
instructions
• thus understanding culture,language and dialect of test takers is important
• practitioners should be skilled in administration of such measures
Item format
• depending on what people have been exposed to – item format (mutliple-choice, essay
type or true/false questions) can impact on the performance
• example items should be included to ensure practice and familiarity
• another option would be to balance the different item formats
