First of all, take note of the mark allocation. As a general rule, I make sure my answer is at

least 10 sentences long when I get a question like this. To find the purpose, read the text at

least twice and ask yourself, ‘what is the author trying to communicate?’


Next, consider the race, age, gender, and nationality of the author, as well as the setting of the

excerpt. This gives you a lot of information. In this case, Maya Angelou is a Black American

woman. Black people are a minority in America and are victims of a system that was created

to work against them so she experiences a number of injustices in her home country.

However, when she comes to Africa, she becomes part of the majority (racially) which gives

her a sense of belonging that she lacks in her home country.


Therefore, consider all these things when answering such a question and support them by

giving reference to the text provided. In this case, this excerpt is about racism, so your answer

should compare racism in America to racism in Africa.
