Lab Activity 2-Chemical Reactions

I. Objectives
 To understand the concept of different chemical reactions.
 To acquire knowledge and skills to perform chemical reactions in the lab.
 To distinguish the types of chemical reaction from one another.
 To acquire good understanding of the terms such as single and double
displacement, combination reaction, and decomposition reaction.

II. Introduction
A chemical is a process that occurs when two or more molecules interact to form
a new product. Compounds that interact to produce new compounds are called
reactants whereas the newly formed compounds are called products. There are
different types of chemical reaction and it depends on the reactant and products
formed.
A Single displacement reaction shows that one element is substituted for another
element in a compound. A double displacement reaction occurs when parts of two
ionic compounds are exchanged, making two new compounds. On the other hand, a
combination reaction is a reaction in which two or more substances combine to form
a single new substance. While a decomposition reaction can be defined as a chemical
reaction in which one reactant breaks down into two or more products.

, IV. Methodology (Schematic Diagram)
A. Single Displacement Reaction

Clean two iron nails of sufficient size by Keep the other nail in a Petri dish for
rubbing them with sand paper so that their comparison after the experiment.
color appears grayish.

Take sufficient quantity of copper sulphate Keep the two test tubes undisturbed for
solution in two different test tubes. about 15 minutes.

Clamp the test tubes to different stands.
Remove the iron nail immersed in the
copper sulphate solution and put it in the
Petri dish.

Tie one nail using a thread and hang in one
test tube. Tie the other end of the thread to
the stand.

B. Double Displacement Reaction

Take 2ml of sodium sulphate solution in a test tube.

Take 1ml of barium chloride solution in another test tube.

Add barium chloride solution to sodium sulphate solution.

Observe the change.
