Administration of medications is among the key roles that the nurse plays in inpatient care.

Medication is the cornerstone of patient treatment and as such, is extremely important in the patient`s

road to recovery. Medication errors are described as preventable occurrences of situations where there

is an inappropriate use of medication and the medication potentially or eventually inflicting harm to the

patient (Weingart et al., 2018). In hospice care, medication errors are more likely to occur due to the

condition of the patients; palliative care (Grądalski, 2019).


Medication errors are a common occurrence in hospitals spread across the country. The effects

of medication errors are devastating to the patient, hospital, and the guardians of the patient. For the

patient, medication errors lead to a lengthened hospital stay, reduced chances of favorable disease

outcomes, development of new drug-related conditions such as antimicrobial resistance or worse yet,

fatalities that may extend to the death of the patient (Tariq et al., 2020). To the family, medication errors

not only contribute to additional economic costs but also leads to loss of trust in the healthcare workers
