Project Literature Review – Bedside Handoff Communication
As a profession, nursing has become more complex and is constantly evolving. Evidence-
based research used in the improvement processes is vital to removing impending change
barriers and supporting the change process. As an advanced practice nurse, assessing and
evaluating the processes currently in place to ensure patient safety, positive patient outcomes,
and patient satisfaction is an essential component of the role. Providing safe, quality care and
positive outcomes to our patients is our priority, promoting positive patient satisfaction.
Handoff communication has been designated as a patient safety goal to minimize the potential
for adverse events. A standardized handoff process assures that vital information is transferred
from one caregiver to the next, ensuring continuity of care.
The use of bedside handoff communication impacts continuity, safety, and patient
satisfaction (Sharp, and al., 2019). Developing and implementing bedside handoff
communication is key to improving our practice, improving staff and patient satisfaction, and
improving outcomes. Using effective communication is a vital part of caring for our patients
safely and efficiently. The use of communication, which is clear and concise, improves the
quality of care for our patients and promotes positive outcomes and improved satisfaction
providing safe and effective patient care. As healthcare providers using effective communication
plays an integral role in influencing outcomes and satisfaction for our patients.
The purpose of this paper is to review literature that discusses bedside handoff communication as
an evidence-based process change and the impact on patient satisfaction. Throughout the paper,
a current evidence-based literature review will be completed, the application of the literature to
the process change identified, an analysis of the literature identified, and finally, a conclusion of
the process.
