ASSIGNMENT 7
2023
The information processing theory is based on the idea that humans actively process
the information they receive from their senses, like a computer does. Learning is what is
happening when our brains recieve information, record it, mould it and store it.
In information processing theory, as the student takes in information, that information is
first briefly stored as sensory storage; then moved to the short term or working memory;
and then either forgotten or transferred to the long term memory, as:
semantic memories (concepts and general information)
procedural memories (processes)

For learning to occur, it's critical that information is transferred from the
short term memory to the long term memory, because if we have more than
seven pieces of information in our short term memory at one time, we get
an overload (referred to as cognitive overload).
So how to we avoid cognitive overload with students? If teachers prioritizing the
information they give students, they help students to work our the critical elements of
the information.
Make sure you have the students’ attention, and help students to make connections
between new material and what they already know. (Image to the right adapted
from Cognitive Approach to Learning.)
Include lesson time for repetition and review of information, present material in a very
clear manner, and focus on the meaning of information.
, Information processing theory and theory of human motivation are two different
psychological theories that explain different aspects of human behavior and
cognitive processes.
Information processing theory focuses on how people perceive, interpret, store,
and retrieve information from their environment. This theory states that humans
process information in a series of stages, including input, processing, storage,
and output. The theory also explains that people use different cognitive strategies
and processes, including attention, perception, memory, and problem-solving, to
process and utilize information.
On the other hand, the theory of human motivation focuses on the factors that
influence human behavior, emotion, and motivation. This theory explains that
humans are driven by specific needs, including biological, psychological, and
social needs, and that their behavior is motivated by these needs. The theory also
explains that humans are influenced by their internal and external environments
and that they actively seek to fulfill their needs through their actions and
decisions.
In summary, information processing theory focuses on how humans process and
utilize information, while the theory of human motivation explains why humans
behave in certain ways and what drives their behavior.
Construction:
I can construct a possible connection between these theories based on how
motivation works in the IPT. In the IPT, motivation plays a significant role in how
the brain processes, stores, and retrieves information. One's motivation to
process information and attend to it relies on their needs and goals. THM's
hierarchy of human needs effectively explains why motivation is critical to
information processing: when our lower-level needs are not met, we tend to
ignore cognitive tasks (e.g., processing information) and focus instead on
satisfying our biological needs. So, fulfilling lower-level needs first before
addressing information processing needs is essential. On the other hand, a
satisfied lower-level need will lead to the motivation of a person to move up to the
higher-level needs and work on fulfilling them, leading to increased motivation for
cognitive tasks like information processing. Therefore, THM's hierarchy of needs
