The patient reports an abrupt weakness in the legs with a crawling sensation, pain, and tingling in the legs. He also reports a burning sensation that started in the lower trunk area. He states, “I feel a little nervous and scared. Am I having a stroke? Sometimes I feel like I am having trouble taking in a deep breath. Is that just my nerves?” There is history of a recent episode of gastroenteritis, but ot herwise he reports good general health. 1. List several of the diagnostic tests that this patient is likely to have. • Lumbar puncture to evaluate cerebrospinal fluid; • Peripheral blood tests may show a moderate leukocytosis • Electrophysiologic studies demonstrate demyelination • Neuropathy electromyographic findings, which reflect peripheral nerve function • Nerve conduction velocity testing is performed with the EMG • A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scan may be requested to rule out other causes of motor weakness; vital capacity may be decreased • Arterial blood gas (ABG) values may be abnormal 2.
