Although there is a standard, if you will, of how children across the board should develop
mentally and physically as they age, each individual child is unique in their development. At some point or another during their life, most children will become impulsive, be easily distracted, or have issues with their concentration. These behaviors can occasionally be mistaken
for or confused with the symptoms of certain disorders which in turn can lead to over-diagnosis.

“overdiagnosis is the diagnosis of a medical condition that would have never have caused any symptoms or problems. This kind of diagnosis can be harmful if it leads to psychological stress and unnecessary treatments.” When it comes to psychological and psychiatric disorders, over-
diagnosis can occur due to multiple factors including over detection and medicalization “of some
behavior patterns” (Kazda, L., Bell, K., Thomas, R., McGeechan, K., & Barratt, A., 2019).

For diagnosis, a child and the child's environment must be assessed by a licensed healthcare provider with the child’s cultural background, gender, and age being factored into the assessment.
