FOR SECOND YEAR STUDENTS IN BIOCHEMISTRY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY
Answer any THREE questions. Answer each question in a separate book. Parts of a
question carry equal weighting unless otherwise specified.
1. Addition of epidermal growth factor (EGF) to cells expressing the EGF receptor
leads to transcription of the early response gene c-fos. Describe the full
sequence of events that link growth factor binding to target gene transcription.
2. You are studying a hormone that acts through a G protein-coupled receptor
(GPCR). Adding the hormone to cells expressing its receptor results in
oscillations of intracellular [Ca2+]. Propose a mechanism that explains this
behaviour and discuss how the [Ca2+] oscillations may ultimately lead to
phosphorylation of effector proteins.
3. How strong is the evidence that Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease are caused
by prion-like mechanisms?
4. Discuss fast and slow neurotransmission and the different roles they have in the
nervous system.
5. Why do we need different functional classes of CD4 T cells? Describe their roles
in adaptive immune responses.
6. Define what a stem cell is (15%). Discuss how stem cells can be used to learn
more about disease mechanisms and how they might be used as disease
treatments (85%).
