The aim of this course is to help the student understand definitions of psychopathological
disorders, and particularly why some people develop, or maintain, psychopathology and
why some people are more resilient.


The rest of the lecture was a general introduction about the writing assignment, and the two

, Lecture 2: Fundamentals


The goal of developmental psychopathology is trying to understand; understand the
essence of psychopathology, how it occurs, and how it develops.


Developmental psychopathology (DPP) is the study of normal development (in children
and adolescents) that has gone ‘awry’. It is this abnormal development that leads to
psychopathological problems in children and adolescents.


Abnormal behavior is not just atypical, but (can) also be harmful. It is developmentally
inappropriate behavior.
- Age and the situation/context are often the two most important variables to consider
when thinking about behavior as (ab)normal.
- Gender and culture are also important variables to consider.


Children and environments are interdependent: interactional view. This means that both
the children and the environment are active contributors to adaptive and maladaptive
behavior.


Abnormal behavior involves continuities and discontinuities:
- Continuity: developmental changes are gradual and quantitative; predictive of future
behavior patterns.
- Discontinuity: developmental changes are abrupt and qualitative; not predictive of
future behavior patterns.
