Biography
Edgar Allan Poe

● Died: October 7th, 1849

● Best known → poetry and short stories (particularly, tales of mystery and macabre)

● Considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and science fiction
● First, well-known American writer, that could afford a living only by writing

He was born in Boston and was the second son of two actors. His father left the family in
1810 and his mother died the following year. Edgar was only 3 years old, so he was taken by
Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia. They never formally adopted him, but Poe was with
them.

Later there was a lot of tension because John Allan clashed over debts, most of which were
incurred by gambling. They also had to pay for Edgar's secondary education costs. Poe
attended the University of Virginia for one semester but left due to a lack of money. Poe
and Allan had a discussion about the funds for his education and he enlisted in the Army
in 1827 under an assumed name.
