The Universal Hero; Herakles
Do you think Herakles/ Hercules deserve to become a god? (15)
To a very large extent, I think Herakles deserve to become a god. He had committed great
deeds and they were recognised. Also, Herakles had heavy association with gods, making him
abnormal.

Herakles, since, youth, had killed countless dangerous monsters and beats, saving thousands
or more people. Seen in the 12 labours, the Nermean Lion which no weapon can penetrate, was
strangled to death by the hero. The Erymanthian Boar, too, who terrorised the country side of
Arcadia was captured by Herakles. The commitment of his was recognised, by not only Greeks
but Romans, even off-grid like the Black Sea. The Temple of Zeus in Greece, had metopes of
his 12 labours at the front and back entrance, indicating his significant contribution. As for
Romans, after defeating Cacus and becoming a god, Potitius and the Pirariam House set up an
altar for him, performing rituals annually. Wreathe their hair with green vines, and use wine as
liquid offerings, they ‘honour’ Herakles as the ‘Mightiest’ even years after.

Herkales also had heavy association with gods. He was son of Zeus, king of gods. He was
protected and helped by countless times by Athena, such as advising him to skin the Nermean
Lion with its claws. The Stymphalian birds task which Athena lent Hephaestus’ rattle to him.
Herakles even had strength that rival gods, Achelous, river god, was overwhelmed by him as it
was like ‘mountain pressing on top of him’. The hero even took on the job of Atlas, holding up
the sky, when the Titan helped him get the apple of Hesperides.

On the other hand, Herakles had earned the wrath and hatred of Hera, queen of gods. Since
birth did she try to skill him, sending snakes to murder him, and sending goddess Madness to
inflict hi, driving him insane and killing his wife, Megara, and his own children. The 12 labours
were also the actions of Hera. Having the hatred of Hera made him unsuitable to become god.

Although at first, Herakles was greatly despite by Hera, in the end when he died and Zeus
wanted to accept him as god, she did not object and complied. Only being disappointed and
upset when Zeus censored her.

‘Temple of Zeus was far greater than the Parthenon’ To what extent do you agree with
this statement? (8)
To some extent, I agree with this statement.

Seen in source A and B, the temple of Zeus has a 6x13 columnade layout which fits into
standard Greek temple. However, the Parthenon had 8x17 layout. This is out of the ordinary,
making it unique. In addition, the size of the parthenon is greater than the Temple of Zeus with a
measurement of 69.5x 30.0 and 64.1x 27.7 respectively. Furthermore, although both temples
are of Doric style, the Parthenon have another row of columns that supported an ionic frieze.
This allows sculpture to depict more stories on the temple, increasing its grandness. Metope
wise, the temple of Zeus illustrates the 12 labours of Herakles at the east and west porch
whereas, the Parthenon have metopes in all direction with 4 different themes. Gigantomachy,
Centauromachy, Athenians against Amazons, and the fall of Troy. The decorativeness of the
Parthenon greatly exceeds the Temple of Zeus.

Despite the Parthenon out does the temple of Zeus on the outlook, the Temple of Zeus
surpasses the parthenon in terms of significance. The temple of Zeus is dedicated to the king of
Gods, ruler of all while the Parthenon is dedicated to its offspring. Also in spite of having the
same height of 13m, the cult statue of Zeus sits on a throne giving an impression of a
magnificent ruler. On the other hand, the cult statue of Athena stands on base thus the size
difference of the gods is great. The cult statue of Zeus is also carefully maintained with a pool of
olive oil in front, ivory is maintained and shimmering light of reflection is created.

All in all, the parthenon outdid the temple of Zeus as a decorative temple, but in terms of
significance, the Temple of Zeus exceeds the parthenon/ Therefore to some extent, I agree with
the statement
7/8 well, balanced, well argued with good details
