1. The four characteristics of van Hiele levels and the implications
are as follows:
1) Sequential: To get to any level above 0, students
must move through all previous
levels. The products of thought at
each level are the same as the ideas
of the next level.
2) Developmental: When instruction or language is at a
level higher than that of the students,
they will be challenged to understand
the concept being developed.
3) Age independent: A third grader or high school student
could be at level 0.
4) Experience dependent: Advancement through the levels
requires geometric experiences.
Students should explore, talk about,
and interact with content at the next
level while increasing experiences at
their current level.

, 2. Level 0 is being able to recognise and name different shapes
based on what they look like. Therefore, the activities will be as
simple as being able to point out specific shapes.
Level 1 is being able to recognise different shapes based on their
specific characteristics and properties, for example, squares
have 4 equal sides and triangles have 3 sides. These activities
would differ in the sense that instead of pointing out specific
shapes, students could sort different shapes into their correct
category for example, group all triangles together and squares
together etc.
Level 2 is being able to recognise the relationship between the
properties of shapes. These activities would be more complex
with students trying to find the minimal defining properties for
various shapes.
