and Frank, and the landlady (Ms. Flynnt).
● What is the setting?
New York, middle of 1960’s (1965).
● What incident sets the story in motion?
Charlie, a developmentally disabled man, is chosen to undergo an
experimental operation to improve his intelligence.


Rising Action: a series of events that enhance conflict and ends at the climax of
the story.
● What are the main events in the story?
● What complications make it difficult for the characters to reach their goals?
1. Charlie has the operation to change his IQ.
2. Charlie races with Algernon but loses.
3. Charlie returns to the factory where his “friends” continue bullying
him.
4. Charlie beats Algernon, and retakes the inkblot test successfully.
5. Charlie figures out a new way to line up the machines which saves
money.
6. Charlie’s intelligence improves very fast (learns punctuation,
languages, and reads difficult books).
7. Charlie falls in love with Miss Kinnian, at the same time he notices
the shortcomings of his professors.
8. Charlie got fired because 800 people signed the petition to let him go.
9. An incident with a boy from the restaurant reminds Charlie who he
was in the past and the need to help handicapped people.
10.Algernon bites Charlie which is a sign of regression.
11.Charlie begins research on the calculus of intelligence.
