Ecology
Animal ecology is an important area of study in science. It is the study of animals and howw
they relate to each other as well as their environment.
It can also be defined as the scientific study of interactions that determine the distribution and
abundance of organism. Animal ecology is concerned with the relationship of individuals to
their environment. These include physical factors and other organism and the consequences
of these relationship for evolution, population growth and regulation, interaction between
species, the composition of biological communities, energy flow and nutrient cycle through
the ecosystem.
Animal ecology deals with the way and manners animals in their natural environment interact
with each other. It focuses on the interaction between animal population and their wider
involvement called the ecosystem. The environment can be natural or affected by human
interaction. Some important component of animal ecology includes.
1. Aquaculture and fisheries
2. Marine animal ecology
3. Resource ecology
There is an ecological balance between all animals in nature. Some animal helps to bring out
the nutrient from the cycle while others help in decomposition carbon and nitrogen cycle. All
animals, insect and even micro-organism play a role in the ecosystem. The animal kingdom is
very important because of the role of animals in the various chemical cycle in the
environment and because their mobility allows materials to be distributed more quickly into
the environment. Many plant also rely on animal to disperse their seeds.
Special Branches of ecology
1. Habitat ecology: It deals with the ecological study of different habitation on the earth and
their effect on the organisms living there. According to the type of habitat living there, it is
subdivided into
A. Marine ecology (oceanography)
B. Estuarine ecology
C. Fresh water ecology (limnology)
D. Terrestrial ecology: This is further divided into 4 namely;
I. Forest ecology II. Crop-plant ecology III. Grassland ecology IV. Desert ecology
