1. Om een situatie of een persoon in het verleden te beschrijven.
2. Om een herhaalde handeling of gewoonte in het verleden aan te geven.
3. De imperfecto geeft de reden of oorzaak van het geen wat er is gebeurd. De gebeurtenis
staat dan in de indefinido.
4. Bij de gerundio.
5. Bij uiterlijk.
6. Bij de tijdsaanduidingen: todas las semanas, a menudo, siempre, muchas veces, antes,
cuando era pequeño, cada semana, normalmente.

1. Om handelingen of gebeurtenissen uit het verleden te beschrijven die geheel afgesloten
zijn. Vaak wordt er bepaald tijdstip in het verleden genoemd.
2. Om opeenvolgende handelingen of gebeurtenissen die plaatsvonden in het verleden aan
te duiden (eerst…toen, enz.).
3. Een aantal werkwoorden die een indefinido vragen omdat ze een eenmalige gebeurtenis
aanduiden: nacer, morir, empezar, decidir etc.
4. Bij de tijdsaanduidingen: ayer, anteayer, anoche, el otro día, el lunes/martes/..., la
semana pasada, el mes pasado, en 1995, en agusto/octubre, hace unos días/un mes/...,
entonces, de repente, luego, enseguida.
