Section 7 Project: “Blood on our Backs”

The article “Blood on our Backs” by Karen Coates gives a perspective of the issues that

garment workers in Cambodia face regarding the living conditions, rate of pay, and the dangers

of workers and individuals who are protesting these conditions. The article discusses the

different variables and perspectives that are affected, however seem to give more attention to the

difficulties that the Cambodian workers themselves face. To give an accurate view of the

different areas that are affected, it would seem only fair to discuss the other social perspectives

involved.

The workers, who are mostly women, are vastly underpaid and overworked, and must

deal with poor living conditions. They are invested in these jobs to be able to feed their families

and make sure that they can take care of their loved ones, and there is usually a lot of

competition to obtain these low paying jobs. The manufacturers of the garments tend to take

advantage of the workers to obtain higher profits and exploit the workers as much as possible as

the demand for work is so high. The retail stores that the garments are for also want to keep costs

low by utilizing the overseas workers who usually are the lowest price to complete the work. The

consumers who purchase the garments are also looking for the lowest costs, and are unwilling to

pay more for the already high costs of clothing, and will only go to another provider if the costs

are higher. Each perspective is looking to gain an advantage over the market, and be able to

make the most amount of money with the lowest cost possible.

The different social perspectives involved tend to cause a tug-of-war between each other

to gain the best advantage in their respective markets and causes a push/pull situation where

when one perspective gains a higher advantage, there is another perspective that will suffer. For
