06.11 AP Practice Essay Eight

The Locavore movement, which consists on eating locally grown products as much as possible has
become widespread over the past decade, while this movement supports the local economy and
provides food security in the case there were to be a natural disaster one must take into consideration
the issues associated with the locavore movement and their implications for the community such as the
bad effects it could have the environment, the effects on the farmers and the fact that most foods do
not have a high nutritional value and the distance.

Furthermore, chemically grown foods produced locally may be cheaper than organic and may aid the
local economy but they pollute the ground water, kill the soil food web, broadcast pesticides into the air,
poison farmworkers, and incrementally poison consumers with toxic residues on their food. The
Locavore Movement does not only affect the environment but “also hurts farmers in other parts of the
world. The U.K. buys most of its green beans from Kenya” (Source C).

Furthermore, the low nutritional value of the food from the Locavore movement is another negative
implication people should consider,” Food begins to lose nutrition as soon as it is harvested. Fruit and
vegetables that travel shorter distances are therefore likely to be closer to a maximum of nutrition”
(Source B). Is it really worth it to eat locally grown products if they have a low nutritional values.

Furthermore, the distance of the food, “To choose a locally grown apple over an apple trucked in from
across the country might seem easy. But this decision ignores economies of scale. To take an extreme
example, a shipper sending a truck with 2,000 apples over 2,000 miles would consume the same amount
of fuel per apple as a local farmer who takes a pickup 50 miles to sell 50 apples at his stall at the green
market. The critical measure here is not food miles but apples per gallon” (Source C). The distance is a
big factor against the Locavore movement since not only could it prevent people from joining the
movement. “For example, a person will be most likely to pass on being a part of the locomotive
movement because of the distance and the fact that the supermarkets tend to be closer “(Source G). But
it also damages the environment because of the amount of gasoline used from those willing to make the
sacrifice of traveling a longer distance.

In conclusion, while the Locavore movement has its advantages there are key negative implications for
the community such as the bad effects it could have the environment, the effects on the farmers and the
fact that most foods do not have a high nutritional value and the distance.
