Unit 5 - Changes & Continuities in the Industrial Revolution (AMSCO pgs.297-356) Changes Continuities Social ● The Industrial Revolution resulted in a huge population transfer of people moving from rural to city areas(urbanization). ● Need for labor in factories increased. ● Working-class was formed. Low wages, long hours, poor conditions, small housing, crowded and polluted living. ● Women still relied on men for income. ● Pre-industrial occupations are still included with the middle class. ● Political ● People demanded the ability to exercise their “natural rights.” ● Middle and working-class protested for better wages and working conditions. ● Voting extended to all male voters after protests. ● Same products came out of the factories: such as cloth and cotton. ● Women and working-class men were still excluded from voting rights. Environmental ● Coal-burning factories cause increased pollution. ● Water also became polluted from waste dumped into streams, rivers, and lakes. ● Smog (smoke and fog) cause respiratory issues. ● Industrial byproducts polluted air and waters. ● ● Supply for fossil fuels. ● There is still pollution in the water and in the air.
