What Do Business Professionals Needs to Know About Computer Hardware ?
-Computer hardware : consists of electronic components and related gadgetry that input,
process, output, and store data according to instructions encoded in c omputer programs
or software.
- Hardware Components
oCentral processing unit (CPU) : selects instructions, processes them, performs arithmetic and logical comparisons, and stores results of operation in memory.
“the brain” of the computer.
Dual-processor : a computer with two CPUs.
Quad-processor : a computer with four CPUs.
Vary in speed, function, and cost.
oMain memory (aka RAM (Random Access Memory)) : place that stores the results of computations from the CPU reading data and instructions from memory.
oStorage hardware : used to save data and programs.
oMagnetic disks (aka hard disks) : are the most common storage device.
oSolid-state storage (SDD) : much faster than traditional magnetic storage because
it stores information using nonvolatile electronic circuits.
Examples: USB flash drives, optical disks (CDs & DVDs)
- Types of Hardware:
oPersonal computers (PCs) : classic computing devices that are used by individuals, recently placed often into tablets or mobile devi ces.
oTablets : a portable computer with digital keyboard.
oServer : a computer that is designed to support processing requests rfom ma ny remote computers and users.
Servers take requests from clients and then bring them things.
oClients: PCs, tablets, and smartphones that access servers.
oServer farm : a collection of many servers.
Can be delivered as a service via the Internet called the cloud .
- Computer Data
oBinary digits (bits) : either a zero or a one.
Used for computer data because that are easy to represent physi cally; a switch can be either closed open.
Light switch method:
Open switch means zero.
Closed switch means one.
Direction of magnetism:
One direction represents zero.
