Betty would not wake up ( thought to be touched by devil) What advice does the doctor send back? Why they were dancing and if they spoke with the devil What is Parris' main concern? His reputation as a minister What did Parris see in the woods the previous night? The girls dancing and a naked woman running What has Elizabeth Proctor said about Abigail? Elizabeth knows that Abigail and her husband had an affair, so she fired her from their service. Abigail believes that Elizabeth has spread "rumors" about the affair. Why does Abigail say she was dismissed by the Proctors? She said she was dismissed because Elizabeth is evil and cruel. Tituba What does Betty Parris reveal about what happened in the woods? Betty reveals that Abigail drank blood as a charm to kill Elizabeth. What have the girls done that violate Puritan codes and could explain their behavior. They have danced (a forbidden activity) and attempted to "conjure the boys" (put a spell on the boys to make them fall in love with particular girls). Mary Warren points out that they can be whipped for engaging in these two activities. Engaging in witchcraft —could result in their hanging - a fate they wish to avoid! Only Abigail was guilty of engaging in witchcraft that night in the woods. What threat does Abigail make to the other girls? She will come to them in the middle of the night and bring a "pointy reckoning that will shudder [them]" What happened in the past between John Proctor and Abigail? How do each of them feel about it now? They were intimate. Abigail has hope that the relationship will continue, but John Proctor says he will cut off his hand before he reaches for her again. What is the function of Rebecca Nurse in the play? She is the voice of reason. When the two girls are acting strangely the morning after dancing in the forest, she cautions the parents not to jump to witchcraft. She states that teenagers "run the devil bowlegged keeping up with their mischief" and that the girls will wake when they are tired of pretending. How does John Proctor feel about Reverend Parris? He complains that Parris never mentions God in his sermons anymore and speaks too much of Hell. Proctor also mentions that Rev. Parris is the first Salem minister to demand the deed to the parish house he is living in What is the dispute between John Proctor and Thomas Putnam? They fight over land Why is Reverend Hale in Salem? He is an expert in the devil and spirits ex. Exorcisms What does Giles Corey reveal to Reverend Hale? To then, this is proof. What ultimatum is Tituba given? Confess to witchcraft, bless the Lord, and name others who are witches with her (or she will be hanged). Who does Tituba accuse of being a witch? Sarah Good or Sarah Osborn What is the effect of Tituba's confession on Mrs. Putnam, Betty and Abigail at the end of Act I? Mrs. Putnam is ecstatic that Tituba has accused the homeless women because she can now blame the women for the death of her babies. Betty and Abigail sense that they can take advantage of the forgiveness extended to those who confess. If Betty and Abigail confess, the adults will focus on the newly named "witch" as the source of evil, rather than the children's misbehavior in the forest. At the beginning of this act, John Proctor says, "It is winter in here yet." What does this imply? John and Elizabeth's relationship is still strained from his affair with Abigail. Elizabeth's demeanor is "frosty" and "cold" towards John. Why has Mary Warren disobeyed her employers and gone to Salem? She has been named an official of the court. This makes her feel more important than a servant. What did Abigail Williams reveal to John Proctor? Elizabeth reminds him of this. That the girls were just playing around in the woods and no witchcraft was involved. Why hasn't John told the court what he knows? What does Elizabeth attribute his not telling to? John worries how he would prove what Abigail said (since they were alone). he is aware of the power she has gained. "If the girl's a saint now I think it not so easy to prove she's fraud." What lie did John Proctor tell to Elizabeth which makes her more suspicious of him? He didn't tell Elizabeth that he was alone with Abigail when they talked. What news does Mary Warren reveal to John and Elizabeth about the trials? Goody Osburn will hang and Goody Good confessed. What does Mary Warren mean when she says, "I saved her life today!"? Abigail has accused Elizabeth of witchcraft but Mary claims that she has never seen any indication of it. Because of her claim the court dismisses the accusation. What does Elizabeth realize when she finds out that she has been accused? That Abigail wants her dead so she can have John. What does Elizabeth ask John to do? She wants John to go to Salem and tell the court what Abigail had said to him about the incident in the woods. Why does Reverend Hale visit the Proctors? To question Elizabeth and John on whether or not Elizabeth has a poppet. Abigail had stabbed herself in the stomach with a needle and they believe elizabeth was behind it based on what she had said about the needle being in the poppets stomach. How does John Proctor respond to questions about why he has not been to church? He is scared and he answers them angrily because according to him his house is one of god. He then is asked to recite the commandments which he almost does until he forgets adultery. Discuss the meaning of "Adultery, John." John cheated on elizabeth with abigail which is adultery and he forgot this was a commandment and sin to do. It is ironic to the reader for this reason. What information does John Proctor reveal to Reverend Hale? Mr. Parris discovered them "sportin'" in the woods. They were startled and took sick." Why does Elizabeth say that she doesn't believe in witches at this point? "I am a good woman, I know it; and if you believe I may do only good work in the world, and yet be secretly bound to Satan, then I must tell you, sir, I do not believe it." she says that if you do good- you can't be bound to satan What news does Giles Corey reveal to the Proctors and Reverend Hale? She made the poppet during court and he wants her to admit to putting the needle in for safe keeping but she is afraid of Abigail's threats and being accused of being a witch. What other "symptoms" can be added to the Act I list of "evidence" that the Devil has invaded Salem? Some symptoms that can be added to the Act I list of "evidence" that the Devil has invaded Salem are a frog jumping out of soup, and drinking blood. What is your impression of Elizabeth Proctor by the end of Act II? Of Reverend Hale? At the end of Act II it is easy to see Elizabeth in a different light (e.g., scared, cautious, etc.) when she quietly submits to the officers arresting her when she has done nothing wrong, instead of fighting them. Hale is a completely different person by the end of Act II then he was in the previous acts because his confidence begins to erode and he becomes less sure of his accusations and begins trying to help save innocent peoples lives by pleading with them to confess the truth. How does Reverend Hale initiate the hysteria that closes the Act? Reverand Hale initiates hyseteria at the end of Act II by trying to convince others to confess the truth. When John Proctor marches off to watch his martyr's death, Hale begs Elizabeth to change her husband's mind by screaming, "what profit him to bleed? Shall the dust praise him? Shall the worms declare his truth?" Describe the methods Miller uses to achieve the climactic build-up at the end of Act II. (Note images, syntax, rhythm, any special effects) At the end of Act II, and throughout the book the author uses themes such as intolerance, and hysteria building up the reader's need to find out more information as well as a fear for the characters that they have developed connections with. In addition the author uses very little foreshadowing, and instead uses a present tense method of directing the reader (e.g., filling in the reader using a third-person narrator who occasionally interrupts throughout the acts).
