• Understand the anatomy and shape of the normal female pelvis
and its measurements
• Understand the anatomy of the pelvic floor and the perineum
• Describe the female external genitalia, internal organs and
relative ligaments, nerves and blood vessels
• Know the difference between episiotomy and 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th
degree perineal tear
• During the rotation, you should observe 5 cases of perineal repair
in the delivery suite including episiotomies
• Be able to describe the findings of a pelvic examination – size,
position, mobility consistency of the uterus, adnexal findings +/-
any masses

• Pelvic inlet - the pelvic brim, the entrance into the lesser or
true pelvis. Bound by the pubis, iliopectineal lines, alae and

to the tip of the coccyx. Bound by the pubic arch, sacrosciatic
ligaments, ischial tuberosities and tip of coccyx
