Prospectus: Retrospective Review of Cost-Benefit Analyses of Preference Card for Ureteroscopy Procedures Problem Statement The health care delivery system is emphasizing cost-efficient care. The operating room encompasses a significant percentage of hospital costs (Hampson, Odisho, Meng, & Carroll, 2017). Assessment of variation in operating room supply usage can give insight into prospects for cost reduction and improved efficiency without compromising care. One area to improve efficiency is Preference Cards. Preference Cards list all the necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies needed for a successful procedure (Koyle et al., 2018). Knowing exactly which supplies to have in the operating room and when to have them available is key to safety, efficiency, and accuracy in billing for the procedure. According to Behbahaninia, et al. (2016), standardization of Preference Cards will decrease in supply cost variation, minimization of hold items, and cost reduction. While Rose, Modllin, Ciampa, Faler, & Bandera, (2019) concluded that identified outdated Preference Cards, lack of instrument knowledge, circulating nurse, and surgical technician distractions as reasons for contributing to waste. Furthermore, Mahmood, Mylopoulos, Bagli, Damignani, and Aminmohamed (2019) highlighted the importance of bottom-up implementation strategy, which leads to a higher staff buy-in to ensure the successful improvement of Preference Cards. The need to have buy-in from leadership will ensure ease of application of cost savings. Finally, Harvey, Smith, and Curlin (2017) stated that a one-time surgeon review of cards resulted in a decrease in the number of disposable, reusable instruments and provided ongoing cost savings. Despite the current literature, there is a need to further research Preference Cards cost and variation among Urology practice with an emphasis on Ureteroscopy procedures.
