AZ Stores was established in 2011 as an organisation that sells groceries (including fresh
produce), clothing and household products directly to the public. By 2019, they had stores in
all provinces and were competing with national supermarkets known to offer "fresh
products fresh". They used a decentralised training model to offer training at store level,
with newly appointed staff shadowing a more experienced staff member. However, the
Covid-19 pandemic took its toll on this organisation because of their limited online services
and delivery only for bulk sales. Under level 5 of the national lockdown in South Africa
(March/April 2020), the survival of organisations like AZ Stores was highly dependent on
online sales and delivering basic and fresh products to their clients.
This forced AZ Stores to make changes to the way they do business and all their strategic
business plans. AZ Stores had to develop a delivery system to take their products to their
clients quickly and safely. As the purchase of more delivery vehicles and the recruitment of
experienced drivers is an expensive project, AZ Stores decided to go into partnership with
large, independent delivery services that already existed all over South Africa before the
coronavirus outbreak. These drivers had their own transport and knew the areas where they
operated. In store, packers no longer only had to keep shelves stocked, but they also had to
learn how to pack orders for clients, while cashiers still had to ring these orders up to
provide accurate slips and stock control. AZ Stores had to develop work schedules to have
enough workers in the stores to successfully manage the orders but also according to the
government's lockdown measures. It was important for AZ Stores to keep in mind that, in
this time, the drivers used would become the face of AZ Stores to their loyal and new
clients.
At the end of 2020, AZ Stores, after considering their 2020 financial losses and the decrease
in their market share, decided to become an online only store, AZ Online. AZ Online aims to
become the top online shopping platform by delivering all purchases at your door within 24
hours or your money back. They still offer groceries (excluding fresh products), clothing and
household products while expanding their product range to electronics and cell phones.
Sadly, AZ Online will cut down on the number of stores and the remaining stores will be
changed to storage facilities. This meant that staff would become packers and cashiers, all in
