Notes on the book ‘Factfullness’:

Notes on the book ‘Population and Society’:

, Notes from the lectures:

Lecture 6 feb 2023: introduction:

4 positive way you can look, which are often true, because we get so much negativity in the
media:

1. Most things are improving, instead of everything getting worse
2. One hump of wealth, instead of a hump of rich and one of the poor as it was
earlier on.
3. First social, then rich, not first rich and then getting social.
4. Sharks kill few instead of that they are dangerous

Why are the chimpanzees mentioned so much in the video of TED? They are giving random
answers, so if people score lower than chimps, we are so influenced by the media etc. in the
wrong direction.

Lecture 7 feb 2023: population change over time:

Main components of population change:
- Births
- Deaths
- Migration (immigration (people coming in) emigration (people going out) and
migration within countries)

Absolute numbers:
Population = population + births – deaths + immigrants – emigrants = population at time t+1

Rates:
- Crude deaths rate
- Crude birth rate
- Net-migration rate

With rates you have a clearer view, how big or small a number is, as opposed to absolute
numbers, they can say nothing if you don’t have knowledge of the things that are related to it
(like the total population). Rate = number of events / total population

Crude rates are used to control for differences in population size between countries/regions
over time.

Crude deaths rate (per 1000) = number of deaths / population x 1000
Crude birth rate (per 1000) = number of births / population x 1000

Crude Rate of Natural Increase = (CBR-CDR) / 1000, expressed in a percentage, so x100 at
the end.
