1 INTRODUCTION TO THE MODULE

As part of this tutorial letter, we wish to inform you that Unisa has implemented a
transformation charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In response to this
charter, we have also placed curriculum transformation high on the agenda. For your
information, curriculum transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred
scholarship, the pedagogical renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the
scholarship of teaching and learning, and the infusion of African epistemologies and
philosophies. These pillars and their principles will be integrated at both the programme
and module levels, as a phased-in approach. You will notice the implementation thereof in
your modules, and we encourage you to fully embrace these changes during your studies
Dear Student

Welcome to the Transformative Counselling Encounters module. We hope that you will
enjoy studying it, that it will enrich your knowledge, and that it will help you to develop a
better understanding of how counselling is relevant to everyday lives in many different
ways. With all the uneasiness that surrounds our daily lived experiences, counselling
becomes an important vehicle for restoring the much needed balance in people’s lives and
to improve the quality of their lives.

This tutorial letter contains important information. Read it carefully and store it in a safe place
for future reference.

Some of this tutorial matter may not be available when you register. Tutorial matter that is
not available when you register will be posted to you as soon as possible, but is also
available on myUnisa.

Should you be living with a disability, please inform the module leader. The module leader
will contact you to assess your needs so that reasonable accommodation can be arranged.

Note that study material can NOT be faxed to students.

2 PURPOSE OF AND OUTCOMES
2.1 Purpose

The purpose of this module is to expose you as student, to contexts where counselling
encounters can potentially happen and to help you to see the world as a set of interrelated
systems. This will help you to recognise that problem-solving contexts do not exist in
isolation. The module also aims to foster the idea of counselling encounters as an ethical
practice through which humanness and well-being in society can be enhanced.

Successful completion of this module however, does not qualify you to be a fully-fledged
counsellor nor lead towards registration as a counsellor with professional regulating bodies.
This module will however, provide you with the foundation towards a career in counselling.

, 2.2 Outcomes

The module specifically emphasises five meta-outcomes. When you have completed this
module, things that you should be able to do involve being:

● sensitive to persons and interactions in contexts of mutual or reciprocal
relation and establishing appropriate relationships with others;
● able to open a space in which negotiation for counselling can happen by
skillfully establishing trust and applying empathy and flexibility;
● able to co-generate enhancing possibilities and connections and understand
the positive factors that enhance the development of a meaningful and
purposeful engagement in a relationship;
● able to detect the qualitative shifts in relationship dynamics and appropriately
consider relational ethical issues in a counselling process, and;
● able to recognise the differences between content and process, thoughts and
feelings.

All of these outcomes will have an impact on your personal life as well as the lives of
those you encounter. They are about formulating relationships and what it means to be a full
human being.
