Annexation of Hawaii (2022/2023) Rated A+ Princess Liliuokalani Princess Liliuokalani realized time was running out for her people ( Hawaiians) because American planters and business people were tightening the control of Hawaii and threatening the monarchy. On a trip to England in 1887, she heard about a "revolutionary movement by those of American birth" in her Pacific Island homeland. While the royal party sent a ship out to Honolulu she noticed that the Americans were taking over her land. Queen Liliuokalani Queen Liliuokalani wanted Hawaiians to regain economic control of their islands by taking away the powers of American sugar planters but unfortunately she was overthrown. She was removed from power but continued to fight to get back the throne. She was the head Of the Oni pa'a movement and she appealed U.S. government to. Do justice and restore her this property. Eventually, Lilioukalani was overthrown and Hawaii joined the United States. King Kamehameha I King Kamehameha unified the Hawaiian islands at the time Americans and Hawaiians began to trade in the 1790's. John Stevens John Stevens was the chief American diplomat in Hawaii who was supportive of the planters revolt which made it a success. He arranged for marines from the warship Boston to assist in the revolt. He recognized the new government and a treaty was sent to Washington to seek a treaty that would annex Hawaii to the United States. Grover Cleveland Grover Cleveland was the president of the United States who opposed annexation of Hawaii and he withdrew the annexation treaty when he found out that Hawaiians did not support the planters revolt. He called the American interference in the Hawaiian revolution "disgraceful." Benjamin Harrison Benjamin Harrison signed the treaty that was to annex Hawaii into the United States but the treaty was not ratified by the senate until after Benjamin Harrison was out of office. William McKinley William McKinley was the successor of Grover Cleveland who was in office when congress approved the annexation of Hawaii and soon after it became a territory of the United States. Sanford B. Dole Sanford. B. Dole was an elderly judge that lead the group of American business people that temporarily overthrew Hawaiis monarchy because Grover Cleveland opposed to takeover. He refused to hand power back to the queen of Hawaii and on July 4, 1894 Hawaii officially became an independent republic with Dole as president. William H. Seward The 1887 Secretary of State who acquired the Pacific Islands of Midway that were more than 3,000 miles west of California and served as an important stopping place for Americans enroute to China. Pearl Harbor In the 1890's Congress began imposing high tariffs on Hawaiian sugar. As a result, sugar exports to the U.S. dropped sharply. Facing ruin, the sugar planters plotted away to avoid the new tariff. They argued that because the United States already had a naval base as Pearl Harbor, a military base and harbor on Oahu, Hawaii, Hawaii could be made a territory of the U.S. Villages of Honolulu and Lahaina The villages of Honolulu and Lahaina had good ports so they grew in importance for Hawaii when King Kamehameha I began to unify the islands. Hawaiian Islands The Hawaiian Islands was a chain of eight large and about 100 smaller islands that lay about 2,000 miles west of California. The Hawaiian people in the 1800's lived in independent communities with its own chieftain. The Hawaiian Islands has a good environment for farming and fishing and they began to trade with the United States in the 1790's.
