Het geïntegreerde concentratieverloop in het bloed (plasma) na een dosering van een geneesmiddel
laat zich volgens wetmatigheden en mathematische modellen beschrijven. Farmacokinetische
parameters (kengetallen) als klaring (Cl), verdelingsvolume (Vd) en halfwaardetijd (T1/2) spelen
hierbij een grote rol. De grafische weergaven van het geïntegreerde proces is de zogenaamde
plasmaconcentratie-tijdcurve.
Het opbouwen van een concentratie in het bloed (en dus ook bij de receptor) wordt verkregen door
het toedienen van een dosis van het geneesmiddel. Dit betekent dat een optimale concentratie
wordt verkregen door aan de hand van de kinetische kengetallen ene juiste concentratie te kiezen.
