De endocriene regulatie van de voortplanting wordt in de hypothalamus-hypofyse-gonaden-as in
kaart gebracht.
De aandrijving van het systeem vindt plaats vanuit de hypothalamus, war het gonadotrophin
releasing factor (GnRH) stootsgewijs (pulsatiel) wordt afgegeven aan het portale vaatsysteem van de
hypofysesteel, op weg naar de gonadotrofinen-producerende cellen in de hypofysevoorkwab. Echter
geven de ovaria de signalen die zorgen voor de synchronisatie van het ovulatieproces. De
communicatie tussen het ‘centrale systeem’ en de ovaria vindt plaats via de bloedbaan, d.m.v. de
gonadotrofinen respectievelijk de steroïden die geproduceerd worden in de ovaria. Feedback vanuit
de ovaria kan op de gonadotrofinen-afgifte een remmende of een stimulerende invloed hebben.
De negatieve feedback regelt de follikelgroei in de ovaria en het ontstaan van een dominante follikel,
en voorkomt een overstimulatie van het ovarium.
De positieve feedback zorgt voor synchronisatie van de morfologische en hormonale veranderingen
van de follikel met de massale afgifte van gonadotrofinen die midcyclisch moet plaatsvinden om de
‘rijpe’ follikel tot ovulatie te brengen.
