MODULE 08 WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT - FLUID IMBALANCES 2 Electrolytes are ions that can either be charged positive or negative. Electrolytes play different roles in our body depending on their charge and are essential to life. They have functions such as muscle contraction, and the movement of fluids within the body. Electrolytes are produced when the kidneys or adrenal gland sense a deficit. The body’s positivity charged electrolytes are Sodium Na+, Potassium K+, Calcium Ca+, and Magnesium Mg+. Negative electrolytes are Chloride Cl -, Hydrogen phosphate HPO4-, Bicarbonate HCO3-, and Sulfate SO4-. (Registered N, n.d.) Sodium has a primary role in the body's fluid balance, and it also has an impact on the central nervous system as well the functioning of the bodily muscles. When you have a high sodium count, you will have high fluid levels. Water follows sodium. Hypernatremia is a sodium level higher than 145, this results from some different factors such as dehydration, diabetes insipidus, or can result of a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, extensive exercise, overexposure to environmental heat, and Cushing's Syndrome.
