from countryside are conservative, the young man and his beloved lady tend to follow
modern traditions, when people merry because they simply love each other. Nnaemeka’s
father‘s vision was completely different. The phrase “They are most unhappy if the
engagement is not arranged by them” (Achebe n.p.) emphasizes the key conflict between
generations, as Nnaemeka and Nene have found each other without any assistance from his
family’s side, which made his father feel disappointed.
