Research Ethics Simulation - Daytona State College NUR MISC
1. Describe each of the four roles. Dr. Richard Sowers, a principal investigator (PI), a busy oncologist who must strike a balance between doing what he thinks is best for his patients and his research. He is a respected researcher and physician. Jan Klein, RN, a clinical research coordinator, an overworked nurse who works for a PI who pressures her to falsify data and violate study protocols. She is classified as a nurse, Clinical research coordinator and a mom. Megan Boyle, a research assistant who has difficulties obtaining informed consent and following research protocols. Dr. Marcy Rosenberg, IRB Chair, who is tasked with ensuring that research participants and the integrity of the research enterprise are protected while dealing with a culture resistant to change. 2. Discuss obstacles that each person came across while participating in the research study. Here are some of the ethical dilemmas I came across. Dr. Sowers ran into the dilemma of enrolling patients into a research study early before the institutional review board approved, verses waiting for the institutional review board approval then enrolling patients. Dr. Sowers also ran into the obstacle of stepping into intervene in the consent process that Jan Klein was explaining to the potential future participant who was looking like they were not fully understanding the trial. The dilemma was while Jan is explaining does he say something to make sure the patient is fully understanding, or does he let Jan stay on the same track with a not fully understanding participant. Dr. Sowers is also confronted with four participants he signed up for the study becoming ineligible for the qualifications listed to be on the study, the dilemma is should he keep the participants on anyways or remove the participants from the study following the ethical guidelines. Dr. Sowers is confronted with his nurse Jan informing him that she has had poor data reporting habits, the dilemma is do they falsify the missing information? Or do we leave the area blank and move forward with better date reporting practices? Jan RN is faced with Dr. Sowers wanting to move forward with adding participants onto the trial, the dilemma she is face with is going along with the PI to avoid any ripples or giving him pushback to do th
