, The parent-child attachment is an important relationship for the child's development. Child
temperament can affect this relationship, which may be enhanced by parental self-efficacy.
In order to promote a secure attachment relationship, it is important to support parents in
growing the parent-child attachment. To to be able to support parents as well as possible, it‘s
important to research whether parental self-efficacy influences the effect of child
temperament on the parental-child attachment.
Self-efficacy is expected to have a negative impact on the relationship between child
temperament and parental-child attachment. A sample of N = 202 mothers and their firstborn
children was drawn from a longitudinal study of parenting, upbringing and development.
During the current study, questionnaires were taken to measure child temperament and
parental self-efficacy. In addition, attachment was measured during a research in an
examination room. The results were analyzed using a multiple logistic regression analysis in
SPSS. The analysis found that child temperament correlates positively with the resistant
attachment classification and negatively with the avoidant attachment classification. In
addition, it has been shown that a higher degree of parental self-efficacy has a negative
effect on the correlations between child temperament and attachment. This indicates that
child-temperament has less influence on the parent-child attachment when parents have a
higher level of self-efficacy. These findings highlight the importance of early interventions in
mothers with low levels of self-efficacy. A possible follow-up study could focus on fathers and
their children in order to broaden the target group and effectively support both parents.
