DISCUSS THE PHYSIOLOGICAL BENEFITS OF DEEP WATER EXERCISE - Answer- successful in maintenance of aerobic performance. Favorable in training responses including development of cardiorespiratory fitness Decreases the compressive load on the spine when compared to shallow water exercises EVALUATE PARTICIPANTS' READINESS FOR DEEP WATER EXERCISE - Answer- Will participant be able to maintain vertical body position in deep water? Has participant been doing any prior physical activity? Will participant be able to enter and exit pool independently? Is participant dealing with any heart or respiratory conditions? Is participant nervous abut being in water over his or her head? DESCRIBE FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN MANAGING THE DEEP WATER EXERCISE ENVIRONMENT - Answer- Pool depth Participant workout space Water temperature Air temp Pool Entry and Exit Returning to vertical position Lifeguard Shoes Equipment Safety DIFFERENTIATE THE BENEFITS AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS OF DEEP WATER EXERCISE EQUIPMENT - Answer- Flotation belts- designed to give buoyant support in the water so theexerciser can focus on using the water's resistance to achieve desired intensity. Flotation Vests- provides neutral buoyancy and may provide a comfy alternative for some people. Flotation Upper Arm Cuff- provide comfy option for participants who feel restricted by a belt (prenatal and asthmatic individuals) Flotation Ankle Cuffs- provide byoyancy an added resistance during a workout. Require participants to engate the trunk muscles to maintain a vertical body position. Foam Legs- provides flotation assistance but is not considered as secure as a belt, vest, or arm cuff. Should only be used for people with swim skills. Resistance Devices- can be used safely if participant is using flotation device for support. (upper) (lower)- can be used safely if the participant is using a flotation device for support. IDENTIFY THE CAUSES OF AND SOLUTIONS TO PARTICIPANT PROBLEMS WITH TECHNIQUE AND ALIGNMENT IN DEEP WATER EXERCISED - Answer- Instructors need to remember the basic principle for deep water is the body is immersed in a predominantly unnatural environment. Collasping the chest toward hips. Correction - Practice elongating the body and give cues for maximum space between pelvis and ribcage. Kicking heels up behind body which may cause compensatory pelvic tilt & resultant low-back archbecause body is falling forward. Correction-asking for a higher lift of knees in front & placement of ankle posterior of knee (not behind body). DESCRIBE THE EFECTS OF BALANCE, MUSCLE BALANCE, PLANES AND AXES, AND TRANSITIONS ON BODY MECHANICS IN DEEP WATER EXERCISE. - Answer- Balance- key in deep water movement. With no anchor points for the feet on bottom of pool each movement still requires an end point. Muscle Balance- deep water training encourages because the body is immersed so all movements meet the resistance of the water in all directions. Planes/axes- Transitions- provides smooth links and make or safe, effective sequencing. Transitions should keep reestablishing vertical posture & allow aprticipants to feel balanced. EXPLAIN HOW PHYSICAL LAWS ALTER THE INTENSITY OF DEEP WATER EXERCISE - Answer- In deep water, gradually increase exercise volume to allow time for technique improvements. Participants can be easily exhausted in deep water if technique is poor. Using inertia to increase intensity is decrease # of repititions & change direction when traveling. Law of acceleration is primarily about force as opposed to speed of execution. Law of action and reaction- can be used in deep water as a refining exercise technique. Frontal Resistance- in deep water, with body submerged except for head, frontal resistance is extremely prevalent. Hand Position- maintains stability and balance Levers- long levers and full ROM can blend to make deep water a powerful training option.
