Unit 7: Mobile Apps Development – Design and develop
a mobile app
In this assignment, I will be designing and developing the mobile app I have
created catered toward young children to help them learn basic arithmetic such
as addition and subtraction. Throughout I will be reviewing each aspect of my
design and features to be able to give a suitable evaluation for the overall
outcome of the mobile app.

Designing a mobile app
Here is where I will go by showing explaining the user requirement and how I will
go by proposing a solution to fulfil it, as well as additionally giving explaining of
what will be included in the mobile app’s design.

User requirements
Through the scenario given to me, I was able to establish what it was that the
user was asking for me to create. The main objective is to develop a mobile app
which will help children improve their mental arithmetic. The mobile app itself
should be able to teach children what basic arithmetic (addition and subtraction)
is and then run a game/quiz to test their knowledge of what is that they have
learnt. The app should include suitable graphics and sound (optional) to make it
more engaging for young children.

Proposed solution
Under this section is where I’ll show a breakdown of my blueprint of how the
mobile app is going to be built. Many elements are to be included to create a
comprehensive software blueprint.

Description of the program tasks is a list of the core functionality of the
mobile app, generated from the actual user requirement. For my mobile app, a
list will be displayed below showing what will be considered once formal
development begins:
 Greeting screen with an explanation of the purpose of the app
 Several screens consisting of what addition and subtraction is
 Exemplars and quick challenge questions for children to interact with
 Quiz screen for children to attempt and test themselves on how much
they’ve learnt.
 Answer page/screen for children to check at the end.

The target platform is necessary to inform users of what mobile device(s) it’s
for, the operating system(s) it’s supported on and what type of app it is (native,
web or hybrid). My mobile app will be available for smartphones and tablets. It
will be supported in both Android (version 4.1 and above) and IOS (version 8.0
and above) as well as normal internet browsers which are commonly known as
hybrid apps, being cross-platform compatible.

Screen layouts and navigation are simply visual designs which is the starting
point of good mobile app development. Visual designs include the principle of
good screen layout and intuitive navigation.

, Below is a blueprint for my mobile app design. Here you can see how I’ve done
my screen layout and how users will be able to navigate to the next screen with
a tap of a button ‘NEXT SCREEN’ as well as when greeted with the start page
they’ll have the ability to start the app up to by again simply tapping the button
(soon to be named).

Resources and assets
The platform I used was thunkable which utilises drag and drop coding, this is
much easier than doing the traditional coding such as Python, JavaScript, C++
etc.
Resources and assets are needed are to be detailed in the mobile app. This can
be predefined code from a third-party or media assets. Media assets may
include:
 Images (.jpg or .png images files)
 Video (.avi, .mpg or .mov videos clips)
 Audio (.wav, .mp3 .au or .aiff audo files)

Test and review schedule
Testing and reviewing are a critical part of the design process as they will allow
me to see where my mobile app designs excel and where need some
readjustment in. For this, I will need a user to analyse my mobile app design to
help inform me on how to improve and refine it before its fully developed.
Through user feedback, I decided to include some extra features that would help
improve my initial mobile app design. This can be seen below:

In this second design, you can see how each section has been labelled
accordingly to what will consist of each individually. I have also added a few new
features.
First, I’ve now added challenge quizzes for both the ‘addition’ and ‘subtraction’
screen, this is to keep the children still engaged while intaking the information.
This also helps them keep thinking and to be on top of what they are learning.
Second, I’ve now included a button that will allow the children to go back to the
