Activity 1-1
This project is meant to be a visual experience for your students and to create an awareness of the
prevalence of computer and networking devices. It is important for students to get a firsthand view of
computer and networking devices, and this assignment is intended to provide an introduction to the
devices in a fun way. Although many people use computer and networking technology, large numbers
may have never seen certain types of devices or realized how many exist in a single organization.

It may be necessary to schedule in advance the viewing of some parts of the enterprise network
because of access restrictions that apply to certain areas.

It may be helpful to have the local network administrator available to demonstrate how a device is
connected to the network and what function the device performs. It may also be helpful to ask the

,students to create a rudimentary (perhaps hand-drawn) diagram that shows how each of the different
devices is interconnected on the network (depending on the size of the network).

This project will also help students to begin to understand why it is important to not only know the
locations of network devices but also be able to document a network to help troubleshoot problems and
address future design needs.

Activity 1-2
Encourage your students to learn about the history of networking by examining Web sites and other
resources. Consider presenting information you have found about the history of networking. Consider
making a slide presentation to illustrate what you cover in the discussion.

or Lion. Students will need an account with Administrator privileges.

Consider having a discussion about the pros and cons of sharing an Internet connection, including the
cost savings and additional security concerns. You might have a class discussion about using this
option in a business setting compared to a home or home office setting.
