Wat is gezondheid?
Verschillende definities, zoals:
Gezondheid is de afwezigheid van ziekte;
Gezondheid is een toestand van volledig fysiek, mentaal en maatschappelijk
welbevinden (WHO, 1948);
Gezondheid is het vermogen om lichamelijk, geestelijk, sociaal (en spiritueel) te
functioneren in de samenleving (WHO, 1988);
Gezondheid is het vermogen zich aan te passen en een eigen regie te voeren, in
het licht van fysieke, emotionele en sociale uitdagingen van het leven (Huber et al.,
2011).
Opkomst medische wetenschap:
Biomedische model ( sociaal-maatschappelijk model):
Scheiding van lichaam en geest;
Ziekte is een storing in het lichaam;
Waarneembare en identificeerbare symptomen.
Kritiek: effectiviteit is overdreven. De sociaal maatschappelijke invloeden zijn minstens net zo
belangrijk (hygiëne, sanitaire voorzieningen, toenemende welvaart, betere voeding etc.).
Het lichaam kan ‘gerepareerd’ worden.
Determinanten van gezondheid:
Persoonsgebonden factoren;
o Erfelijke factoren;
Sexe;
Genetische predipositie (aanleg).
o Verworven somatische factoren (in leven opgelopen, bijv. cholesterol);
o Verworven psychische factoren (bijv. stress).
Leefstijl/gedrag;
o Patronen van dagelijkse activiteiten (bijv. voeding, roken, autorijden etc.);
o Cluster van activiteitenpatronen die uitleg geeft aan identiteit of type.
Omgevingsfactoren;
o Biologische omgeving (bijv. virussen, bacteriën etc.);
o Fysieke omgeving (bijv. lawaai, huisvesting, groenvoorziening);
o Sociale omgeving (bijv. vrienden, buren).
Gezondheidszorgsysteem;
o Genezing;
o Zorg;
o Preventie.
Public health in historisch perspectief:
1930 – 1875: Industrialisatie en de sanitaire beweging.
1875 – 1950: Public health.
1950 – heden: New public health.
