What is cancer?

Normal cells:

 The inside of a normal cell contains nuclei which contains DNA
 DNA contains genes that control the actions of the cell, and how it goes through the cell
cycle
 If you take a normal cell and put it in culture, it will make a copy of itself until it fills up an
area; if a cell dies, another will fill the gap
o This is how you go from a zygote to trillions of cells inside your body
o This is how skin is constantly regerenated

Cancer cells:

 The cause of all cancers is the same, damage to the DNA
o DNA is made up of nucleotides which contain genes controlling the cell cycle (when it
should copy and stop dividing)
 Mutations can occur in the DNA spontaneously or through risk factors
 If we get a mutation in a cell, there will be genes that can sense something is wrong and a lot
of the time it will undergo apoptosis, and another cell moves into its position
 As we accrue more mutations in a cell, it will eventually become cancerous
