Section A:
Question 1:
There are six main reasons why the precolonial history of Southern Africa is important in
order to understand the historical developments after 1652:
Southern Africa is the subcontinent from where all humans first emerged. It is the cradle of
humankind from which humans originated before they dispersed across the globe. This view
is reinforced the oldest human remains that were found in ancient caves. The marginalised
black people in South Africa when engaging in discourse always refer back to precolonial
Africa. They state that African land originally belonged to their Khoekhoe and San ancestors
and advocate for their claim on the land to be taken more seriously. The understanding of
precolonial African history helps us to critically analyse the view that the Europeans held that
Africa was not inhabited by any intelligent, self-determining society. They held this view
because they did not understand the systems of land ownership and nomadic behaviour of
indigenous African people. If we nurture an understanding of the precolonial hunter-gatherer
and hunter-herder way of life which was best suited for the natural environment of Southern
Africa the we may be able to put into context the relationship between European settlers and
precolonial Southern African societies. If we can understand the beginning of mixed farming
in precolonial Southern Africa , then we may be able to appreciate the historical contributions
of the Bantu-speaking people and communities, because this farming system seemed to create
successful kingdoms and powerful states in the interior of Africa. It will also help us to
debunk the interactions of the descendants of these communities with other societies, like the
trekboer farmers, the khoesan and the settlers on the Northern cape and eastern frontier
regions.
Question 2:
Topography refers to the physical features of a land mass such as mountains, plains, plateaus
and rivers. The topography of a region will have an influence on the settlement pattern of a
particular community because it determines where they can set up their settlements, for
example if a farming community settles they would preferably settle in an area that is next to
a river because of the abundance of water. Most of Southern Africa is located on what is
called “the great plateau” which is 1200-1800m above sea level and is steepest in the east and
slopes down towards the west. This plateau provides a convenient space for human settlement
and migration towards the east where rainfall and vegetation were conducive for mixed
farming practices. The topography of Southern Africa is littered with valleys that provide
