The influence of media and culture on gender
Cross cultural research is good as it contributes to the nurture-nature debate in
that if behaviour is consistent across cultures, gender is biological.
Cultural differences (nurture): Mead studied gender roles in 3 different cultural
groups in New Guinea. She found in one tribe they were gentle and responsive,
another was aggressive and hostile, the last the women were domiant whilst
men passive. Suggests there may not be a direct biological relationship
between sex and gender, gender roles may be culturally determined. She
suggested the extent innate behaviours are expressed is the result of cultural
norms.
Cultural similarities: david buss found consistent patterns in mate preferences
in 37 countries, with women soughting men who could offer wealth, whilst
men sought youth and phsyical attractiveness for a partner.
Munroe and munroe found in most socieites, division of labour is organsied
along gender lines with men being the breadwinner, whilst women the
nurturer.
