, Timeline
2150 BCE Stonehenge
The Welsch bluestones arrive, 82 stones are transported from the Preseli
mountains and arranged as a double circle within the henge.

800 BCE Iron Age
A period in which iron replaced bronze for tools and weapons. It was also a
period of significant social, economic and political changes throughout the
European continent.

43 AD Romans
Invade Britain and made Britannia a roman province. There was little change
to society because they didn’t integrate with the natives.
50 Romans found the city of Londinium – which later becomes London. They
brought roads, forts and baths.
122 Roman emperor Hadrian orders the construction of Hadrian’s wall. This
was built to secure the Empire’s north-western border in the province of
Britannia. The Romans brought peace and prosperity, until they left.

450 The Anglo-Saxons begin to settle in Britain, they rule much of the land
until the Vikings arrive. The Anglo-Saxons did integrate with the natives.
They had an agricultural lifestyle. Supplanting Celtic language with Germanic
dialect, this had an enormous influence on the English Language.

+/- 600 AD Sutton Hoo
The Sutton Hoo burial is considered one of the greatest archaeological finds
of all time. It’s a site of an early medieval burial ground that includes the
grave of an Anglo-Saxon king.

793 The Vikings first arrive, 8 th and 9th century marauders [plunderaars]. They
usually come, plunder and leave.
871 The Vikings divided the land, Alfred the Great becomes king of Wessex.
878 King Alfred the Great is nearly defeated by the Vikings, Alfred gathers an
army and defeats the Vikings at the battle of Edington. King Alfred was king
of Wessex from 871-886 and then king of Anglo-Saxon from 886-899.

1066 The Norman Conquest occurs; William of Normandy becomes king. He
thought he had the right to become king because of his belief. Earl Harold
Godwinson of England was King Edward’s brother-in-law. He was also one of
the most powerful men in England. He felt he should be crowned king.
The Battle of Hastings, William of Normandy set up his army in the city of
Hastings. King Harold marched his army south to meet the Normans.
Eventually William’s army won when King Harold was killed by an arrow.
