NR-293: Pharmacology For Nursing Practice WEEK 3 Edapt Notes Pharm. Corticosteroids are administered through the inhalation route for their effect on lung structures but do not totally preclude systemic effects - Some commonly prescribed corticosteroid inhalers are beclomethasone dipropionate, budesonide, fluticasone, and triamcinolone acetonide MAST CELL STABILIZERS Mast cell stabilizers are a classification of drugs listed in the national guidelines as an alternative therapy (cromolyn and nedocromil). They are rarely used, and when indicated they are prescribed for exercise-induced asthma. They act by stabilizing the cell membranes of mast cells to prevent the release of histamine, an inflammatory mediator. Recall from anatomy and physiology that mast cells are cells responsible for releasing histamine and other substances during inflammatory and allergic reactions. One way to think of mast cell stabilizers is to think of a pot of boiling water that boils over. When it is boiling over, these is a representation of an inflammatory reaction that is out of control. When a mast cell stabilizer is given, it’s like turning down the heat or doing something to the water so the water will stop boiling over. The action to the water is the mast cell stabilizer. It doesn’t stop the process of boiling water, it simply slows it down. Likewise, mast cell stabilizers don’t stop the inflammatory or allergic reaction, it simply tempers the response.
